Google Pitching Online Music Service To Labels

16 Sep

Internet search powerhouse Google is trying to put together an online music service that would take on Apple’s market-ruling iTunes, according to a report at Billboard.com.

Google is courting record labels for a service that would let people download songs in digital format or store music in the Internet “cloud” for streaming to online devices, according to unnamed sources cited by Billboard.

Google is reportedly proposing charging annual subscriptions of about 25 dollars to let people store music online and then stream or download tunes to Internet-linked gadgets as desired, Billboard said.

Google is seeking to have the service include letting customers listen once to any song all the way through before limiting them to a 30-second sample of the song, according to Billboard.

The service would reportedly have aspects of Lala.com, an online music website bought by Apple in December and closed early this year.

Lala boasted a playlist of more than eight million tunes and hosted users’ digital music collections on the Web, allowing access from varied locations in what it described as “music in the clouds.”

Apple has not disclosed its plans for Lala but there has been speculation that it may adapt its technology to create a Web-hosted music subscription service of some kind.

Lala launched in 2006 as an online vision of a vintage San Francisco record store where people tipped each other off to artists, shopped for CDs and traded used ones.

50 Cent Will Not Be Appearing In Eastenders

16 Sep

We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but bosses at Eastenders have quashed reports that 50 Cent will be given a cameo in the hit BBC soap.

Just as we were looking forward to Fiddy taking a trip to Albert Square, doing a spot of shopping on Walford Market or talking bling with Pat Butcher, the BBC have stated that the rapper will not be starring in the show.

Despite the Candy Shop rapper himself claiming that a one-off appearance had been organised with the soap opera, a spokesperson for the BBC has denied the reports, claiming it’s not true.

A rep for the BBC stated: “We’re flattered he’s a fan, but there have been no talks about him appearing in the show,”

Fiddy had previously joked that his ‘biggest showbiz dream’ would been for Peggy Mitchell, played by Barbara Windsor to have thrown him out of the Square’s boozer, The Vic but now it seems that Mr.Cent won’t be walking the East End cobbles after all.

Billboard Hot List #1 Katy Perry Teenage Dream [CD-Quality]

Teenage Dream” is a song by American recording artist Katy Perry. It was release as the second single from her second mainstream studio album of the same name on July 23, 2010 through digital distribution. Perry and Bonnie McKee wrote many songs with a youthful theme in mind, but they were rejected by producers Benny Blanco and Dr. Luke. Blanco showed them The Teenagers’s single “Homecoming”, and McKee imagined “Teenage Dream” as a throwback song to the euphoric feelings of being in love as a teenager. They met with Max Martin in Perry’s hometown of Santa Barbara, California and started writing the track, which Perry later described as a pure moment for her. After Perry recorded her vocals, McKee presented her idea and the chorus was rewritten. Perry also described the song as reminiscent of her youth while contemplating her future marriage to boyfriend Russell Brand.

“Teenage Dream” is a midtempo pop song with a retro sound. Perry starts singing in a high voice and her vocals grow stronger as the song progresses. Lyrically it talks about being with a lover that makes one feel young again. Critics gave mixed reviews to “Teenage Dream”. While some reviewers praised it for its mature feel, others criticized it for not being as catchy as her previous singles. “Teenage Dream” has topped the charts in United States, New Zealand and Ireland as well reaching the top-ten in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, and has charted in Belgium, Sweden and the Netherlands. A music video for the single, filmed in various locations of Santa Barbara, premiered on August 10, 2010. Perry performed the song at the 2010 Teen Choice Awards. The song gave Perry her third US Hot 100 number-one hit, and her her second consecutive number-one single.

Mad Men Soundtrack

15 Sep

The absolutely brilliant conceit of Mad Men, the award winning AMC cable TV series from the US, gives us an ensemble cast of attractive actors set in a turn of the 60′s New York Ad agency locale and allows the writers to microscopically dissect the grime under the superficially perfect patina of these proto-Masters of the Universe.

The series’ sense of time and place is impeccably recreated. The set design, wardrobe, and make up are a wonder to behold. The Madison Avenue offices of Sterling-Cooper are realised with a knowing eye for detail, and within this mise en scène, the comings and goings of the agency’s ruthlessly competitive ad men are stunningly brought to life. Wreathed in cigarette smoke and with a hip flask a de rigour accoutrement, 1960 never looked so cool.

As the first season unfolded and we were getting used to the series’ main protagonist, the driven and mercurial Don Draper, cracks began to appear in these breezily perfect lives. Alcoholism, self-doubt, infidelity, racism and mental illness all bubble to the surface and splinter the veneer. It was the look of the series that drew us all in, it was the perceptive and intelligent writing that kept us watching.

By definition the soundtrack release of Season One of Mad Men largely reflects the superficial gloss of the series. Accurately recreating aurally what the series does visually, the CD is lush soundscape of well known standards of the era. Vic Damone, Ella Fitzgerald, Rosemary Clooney, Gordon Jenkins are all present and correct. Julie London pitches in with her version of “Fly me to the Moon”, which coincidentally was used here in the UK a few years back very successfully in an ad campaign for Ford’s latest coupé The Probe. For the most part you can sit back with a faraway look on your modular sofa, whiskey tumbler in one hand, and cigarette dangling in the other and bang – you’re there in 1960 Manhattan.

The main theme, a descending möbius strip of quasi-classical hip hop lushness is called “A Beautiful Mine” and was written by Eddie Hayes, aka Aceyalone. It suits the opening credits perfectly and is used so sparingly as to leaving you wanting more, and here you can enjoy it in all its 5:29 glory.

The standards are well chosen, from the obvious choices such as “Manhattan” by Ella, and The McGuire Sisters robust version of “Volare”, its easy when listening to conjure up the series in your head.

There is underscore here, composed by David Carbonara, and for the most part is suitably easy listening. He does offer a few tracks that get under the skin of the series main protagonists, and in the track “Mad Men Suite” reflects the self doubts and underlying melancholia of some of the characters. The song “Babylon” jars slightly as a listening experience when set against the rest of the CD but it features aptly in the episode of the same name, wherein Don visits a Greenwich Village beat club and hears a singer plaintively singing this lament which cuts Draper to the bone. The song, originally made well known by Don McLean illustrates the flip side of the dream that Draper is determined to keep going by sheer force of will alone.

The Mad Men soundtrack is a great audio representation of the shows biggest draws, the glamour, the high life, the gloss, and the nostalgia for a perceived utopian era.
